Therapy

Renyou’s therapeutic approach depends on the clinician, as well as the presenting difficulty of your child. Generally a combination of approaches are used in treatment. These include theories and practices from Play Therapy, Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Attachment Theory and Mindfulness Based Therapy.

Jaquie typically offers therapy for children, and families of children aged 18 months to 17 years for a variety of concerns. These include:

  • Behavioural difficulties (tantrums, meltdowns, defiance, aggression)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Anxiety and Mood Difficulties
  • Parent/child relationship concerns
  • Obsessive Compulsive Behaviours
  • Daily Living Concerns or Difficulties (sleep, feeding, hygiene, chore involvement)
  • Difficulties with Social Skills
  • Developmental Delays
  • Emotional Regulation

Gwendolyn offers developmentally appropriate therapy to both children and adolescents aged 4+ using play-based, expressive, and talk-based approaches to support emotional regulation, anxiety, grief, behavioural challenges, trauma, and life transitions.

What to Expect

The first visit depends on the therapist as well as the needs of the family. Gwendolyn requires an initial parent consultation before seeing your child. Jaquie’s initial sessions generally consists of a combination of meeting with the parent and child together, gathering information, and spending some time alone with your child. Generally subsequent visits are a check in with parents, followed by a therapy session with your child. When it comes to therapy for children, the preliminary work is done in therapy sessions but the change often happens in day to day interactions with parents and therefore, strategies and tools are often discussed with parents.

An 8 week Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy group for adolescents and adults with anxiety and depression is in the works. Please stay tuned!
